The Role of Religion in Promoting Social Cohesion and its Impact on Community Development

Abstract

Religion continues to play a significant role in shaping social relationships and collective life in many societies, yet its empirical contribution to social cohesion and community development remains contested. This study investigates the relationship between religious participation, social cohesion, and community development using a quantitative research design. Survey data were collected from adult community members and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression, and mediation modeling. The findings demonstrate that higher levels of religious participation are positively associated with increased social cohesion, interpersonal trust, civic engagement, and perceived community well-being. Regression results indicate that social cohesion is a strong predictor of community development outcomes and partially mediates the relationship between religious participation and community development. Visual and tabulated analyses further confirm the robustness of these relationships across demographic groups and model specifications. Overall, the results suggest that religion contributes to community development primarily through its capacity to strengthen social bonds, shared values, and collective responsibility. The study provides empirical evidence supporting the social integrative function of religion and contributes to policy-relevant debates on community development, social capital, and social cohesion in contemporary societies.
